Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 16, 2011 Report Posted July 16, 2011 Hi All im new to this forum,Ive had a problem with my galaxy tdi 90bhp 1998 on a S for about 6 months now on and off it gets worse lately, the problem is loosing power, also starts fine when cold engine but after driving for a long period the stopping engine it takes about 8 cranks before it starts, there is small air bubbles in the fuel pipe which i can see on the engine Ive tried to get them out by undoing the 4 fuel pipes on top of engine until fuel comes out,but still got air in it,also ive tried to look at all pipes to see if i can see the fuel coming out anywhere but can i have changed fuel filter 2 times also the t piece which goes on the top too but still getting air in????getting back to the loosing power problem which i think is separate to the other problem, yesterday it took me 5 hours to clean the fat rubber pipe on top of the engine and take egr valve off and clean that too,the egr valve didn't look like some of the clogged up ones i have seen pictures of on the net,so i sprayed carb clean into it and cleaned it then put it back to together too ages as fiddly job, today used car and was doing it on and off but when power is there its fine quick fo a 90bhp engine then just feel likes someone turned engine off, also today cleaned maf sensor but still doing it shell i try and replace maf sensor??? im running out of options need your help guys Aaron :( Quote
seatkid Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 (edited) Check the O ring on the T piece inserted into the top of the fuel filter. It is probably either missing, damaged or incorrectly seated and this is what is allowing air into the system. Also check you have installed the fuel filter the right way round - the T piece is closest to the engine. If its the wrong way round then you'll need a new filter - dont just turn the old one around Edited July 17, 2011 by seatkid Quote
Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 Hi Thanks for reply,Ive changed fuel filter 2 times and got a new t piece from scrap yard and tried that on a new filter, looks exact same in your picture as mine t piece to the left still getting air in.Getting back to the loss of power thing I started car last night at 7pm drove round block was loosing power on and off most of time ok,then left over night started it at 5pm today and the power loss was there straight away the drove for 10 secs then it went then back again on and off,if it was the maf would in do it after car had been stood for 24hrs??? it done it straight away soon as i started to drive it??? Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 Im thinking about changing the cat other one been on there 4 years,I heard that can make power loss happen??? Quote
chrispb123456 Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 May be a good idea to check for fault codes as you may have issues with MAP sensor pipework, air in fuel lines don't always cause a problem as the air would bleed back to the tank, having said that you are relying on the fuel injection pump to draw fuel up from the tank through the filter so any loose joint or split pipe could cause air to be drawn in but not neccessarily leaking outwards. Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 Thanks also for reply hmm not sure what the map sensor is yet maybe have to google that one lol,yes it could be a pin prick size hole which would be hard to fined but ive looked all over pipes and dont know? i also found that when i changed the t piece on the top of fuel filter i noticed the fuel filter wasnt full??? i was always led to beleave it should be full or to fill in up when u change fuel filter??? that was odd, also next to fuel take i noticed there was a broken wire that came off some sort of small box next to fuel tank it has i think return pipes goto it not sure no lights come on dash, dont think my galay has a management light that comes on if sensor plugs are off as i unplugged my maf and that done the problem i have with loss of power constantly, then plugged in again and it looses power on and off is that maybe a faulty maf? seatkid Posted July 17, 2011 Report Posted July 17, 2011 (edited) got a new t piece from scrap yard Thats an oxymoron...... Check the O ring(s) on the T piece....the O ring(s) should be replaced when the fuel filter is replaced - its just about the only place for air to get into the fuel line. The T-piece is a thermostatic valve - probably why its worse when hot. The fuel filter is under a vacuum as in your car the fuel pump is in the distributor pump on the engine. Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Update....Done 50 miles today no loss of power still had air in tank tho after warm takes longer to start coz of air Quote
chrispb123456 Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 I think I would temporarily put in a section of clear plastic tube in the pipe from the tank (intake on filter) just to confirm if air is coming from the tank end or not. Quote
Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 20, 2011 Report Posted July 20, 2011 Hmm sounds like a plan just to let you know I've done 100 miles with no power loss 70 miles to a tenner but after warm still takes about 8 cranks to start it when cold starts fine can you give more details on the fuel pipe idear cheers Quote
chrispb123456 Posted July 21, 2011 Report Posted July 21, 2011 Get a length of clear braided fuel hose about a foot long, remove inlet pipe to filter that's the one coming in from the rear (arrow pointing inwards on filter) then with a peice of metal tube connect clear hose to the black hose then connect the clear hose to the filter, use jublilee type clips.Start engine and observe for bubbles travelling through clear pipe. Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 21, 2011 Report Posted July 21, 2011 Ok got to get some clear tube Quote
Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Just a update really still no loss of power 3 days running but still same with air and taking ages to start when engine warm Quote
bigdave982 Posted July 23, 2011 Report Posted July 23, 2011 Might be worth just checking that the plastic drain thing on the bottom of the filter is done up tight I seem to recall seeing air in the clear pipe on thepump on my old 90hp jobbie and this was the cause Quote
Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 Hi mate thanks it is tight as it will go Quote
Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 Update car is still no loss of power but same with starting problem air in diesel engine pipe Quote
seatkid Posted July 25, 2011 Report Posted July 25, 2011 Take the engine cover off and check the braided pipework on the injectors going right back to the fuel filter for looseness, perishing and leaks. Quote
Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 hi seatkid the black pipes that goto the injecter pipes are all perished but cannot see any leaks heres a picture Quote
Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 hmm picture way o big try another Quote
seatkid Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 (edited) Those pipes are injector fuel leakage return pipes. If there are any holes or splits, air can be drawn into the fuel system. From the look of them I would say they warrant further investigation. Also noticed your crankcase breather hose is almost completely worn through (the engine cover rubs on it). Better get it taped up before it splits and makes a big mess. Edited July 26, 2011 by seatkid Quote
Guest Aarongalaxy90tdi Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Ok.Will tape the crank pipe up,can the injector fuel leakage return pipes be replaced with the same pipe as turbo air pipes as i have some same size also do they just pull off and push on as they seem very tight cheers bud Quote
